Art museums and galleries are essential businesses in New York City. During a year when many institutions have been forced to suspend operations or permanently shutter amid the global pandemic, the New York City arts community has gamely forged ahead. After all, the people fueling this world are innovators, and they have adapted to the challenges thrown at them.

For Women’s History Month and beyond, we’re highlighting some of those innovators. We asked three curators—MoMA’s senior design curator, Paola Antonelli; The Rubin Museum’s curator of Himalayan art, Elena Pakhoutova; and David Zwirner director Ebony L. Haynes—how this year affected their creative process, which contemporary NYC women artists they find inspiring; and how the art world has changed, or has yet to change.
